Mr. Muhammad Afifi Che Rawi
Managing Director, SteegeXP
As Loss Adjusters, we are the ones people call when an incident happens. In the insurance sector, we face what people call the “acts of God.” We do not know when or where such events will occur. No one wishes for them, and only God knows. Yet when they come, we carry out our work, with faith that our path is written by Him. Some may see these incidents as God’s punishment. But they may not realise that, at the same time, God gives people like us a duty, to step in, to help, and to bring recovery. In this way, we are also sent as part of His plan, to restore and to support those affected.
Before entering this sector, I worked as an engineer. My task then was to anticipate these forces of nature and prevent incidents from happening. Every design carried safety margins, and every plan studied the environment over a hundred years of records. We believed that such foresight would protect us. Yet, incidents still happened.
This is a reminder of the truth found in the Qur’an, that man may plan, but God is the best of planners (3:54). No matter how much knowledge we gather or how many precautions we take, there will always be matters beyond human control. What truly matters is that we give our best effort, whether in prevention or in response, with honesty, sincerity, and humility.
As we reflect on philosophy and leadership today, let us also see sustainability as part of this balance: to prepare wisely, to respond responsibly, and to accept humbly what lies beyond us. We plan and we act, but ultimately, God decides.
